Simple Journal Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 1, 2026

This is a privacy app, so this is a plain-spoken policy. It explains exactly what the Simple Journal mobile app does and doesn't collect — with the headline being that your entries are end-to-end encrypted and we have no way to read them. Simple Journal is operated by SimpleApps via simpleapps.ai.

1. The short version

Your journal entries — text, photos, voice notes, moods, tags, locations — are encrypted on your device with a key derived from your password. We never receive that password or that key. Our servers only ever store and sync ciphertext. We cannot read your entries, and there is no internal tool, admin panel, or master key that lets us. This isn't a promise of restraint; it's the architecture.

2. How your entries are encrypted

When you set your master password, your device derives an encryption key from it locally (using a slow, memory-hard function). That key encrypts every entry before it is written to disk or sent anywhere. The password is offered to iCloud Keychain / Google Password Manager via the standard OS autofill APIs so it can sync to your other devices — it is never transmitted to us. We never see plaintext entries or the derived key.

3. Where your data is stored

Encrypted entries are stored in the destination you choose: your own Google Drive or iCloud, our sync server (ciphertext only), or local-only on your device. In every case the stored data is ciphertext. We never hold the only copy of your journal, and never a readable copy of it.

4. What we collect to run the service

Simple Journal works offline by default and requires no account to write. If you create an optional account (for cross-device sync coordination or Pro), we collect only what's necessary: email address, an entitlement record, encrypted blob metadata needed for sync (sizes, timestamps, version — never content), basic device metadata, and anonymous crash reports if enabled in your OS settings. We never collect the content of your entries.

5. Waitlist & marketing emails

If you sign up for the waitlist on this page, we store your email address and use it ONLY to notify you when the app launches. If you also tick the marketing-opt-in checkbox, your email is added to the SimpleApps mailing list for occasional updates about other SimpleApps products. The two consents are independent — the first is required to be on the waitlist, the second is always optional. Every marketing email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can request full deletion at any time by emailing [email protected].

6. What we don't do

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with advertisers. We do not run third-party analytics that track individual users. We do not read, scan, or index your entry content on our servers — we can't. We do not use your entries to train AI, ours or anyone else's.

7. Your rights

You can request a copy of your account data, ask for it to be deleted, or permanently close your account at any time by emailing [email protected]. Deleting your account removes your ciphertext blobs from our sync servers; entries already on your own devices or your own cloud remain under your control.

8. Age

Simple Journal is intended for ages 13 and up, and onboarding includes an age check. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
